Instructions for TEAS Online at Institution exams using Respondus
This guide is for students taking a remote ATI TEAS® exam that is proctored by their school or testing center using the Respondus LockDown Browser. It walks you through installing Respondus on your computer or iPad, completing the pre-checks, and starting your exam.
- Check your system requirements
- Log into your ATI account and add your exam
- Install the Respondus LockDown Browser
- Run the Respondus system pre-checks
- Take your TEAS exam
Before you begin – read this first
- Your school sets your exam date and time. Sign in and start the pre-checks at least 30 minutes before your scheduled start time. You have up to 30 minutes after your scheduled start time to begin; after that you may not be allowed to test, and your school’s policies on late arrival, rescheduling, and retakes apply. Check the time zone in your school’s confirmation.
- Select your school on your ATI profile. Your profile’s institution controls which proctoring setup your account receives. Open Profile › Institution and make sure the school you are testing for is selected (this is also where your transcript goes). With the wrong school selected, the Respondus Dry Run and your exam may not appear. How to update your institution
- Test your setup ahead of time. Technical issues with your computer or internet are not a valid reason for a free reschedule. Make sure all technical requirements are met and complete the Remote Proctoring Dry Run on the MY ATI › Assessments tab, on the same device and in the same room you will use on exam day. See the Dry Run Guide.
- Bring your ID. You need a physical, current, government-issued ID (e.g., U.S. passport, driver’s license, state ID card, foreign passport). The first and last name on your ID must match the name on your ATI account. Need to fix your name? Request a name change at least 48 hours before test day.
Step 1: Check your system requirements
You may use any laptop, desktop, or iPad with a supported operating system. See the current list on our technical requirements page.
IMPORTANT: Google Chromebooks are not supported by ATI for remote testing at this time.
Set yourself up for success before your dry run or proctored ATI TEAS exam
- Use a fully charged device, or keep it plugged in.
- Confirm your camera works: webcamtests.com
- Confirm your microphone works: onlinemictest.com
- Confirm you have a strong internet connection: speedtest.net
- Find a well-lit space and be ready for a desk scan. See room setup suggestions and other test day requirements. Public locations are not allowed: you must test alone in a private, secure room, not in a car, coffee shop, or open library area, and not with your back to a window.
- You may use one blank 8½ x 11 sheet of paper (or a desktop dry-erase whiteboard) and two writing instruments during the exam. Destroy the paper when you finish.
- Headphones are NOT allowed unless you have an approved accommodation approved by your school.
Step 2: Log into your ATI account and add your exam
Go to www.atitesting.com/login in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari and enter your username and password.
MY ATI › Assessments tab: your exam card and the Remote Proctoring Dry Run

Your school or testing center emails your TEAS Assessment ID. Your school decides when to send it: some send it two days before the exam, others 24 hours before. If you do not have it the morning of your exam, contact your school right away. To load the exam into your account:
- On your home page, click Add a Product in the upper right corner.
- Enter the Assessment ID from your school and click Continue.
- Click MY ATI, then the Assessments tab. Your ATI TEAS proctored assessment card now appears there; on exam day, click Begin on this card.
Add Product window – enter your Assessment ID

Already completed your Dry Run and installed Respondus? Skip to Step 4 – Run the Respondus system pre-checks. Otherwise, continue to Step 3. You must be on the latest version of Respondus on exam day. The Check for Updates button often does not work — if you are prompted to update, or LockDown Browser gives you any trouble, uninstall it and reinstall it from your exam card (how to reinstall LockDown Browser).
Step 3: Install the Respondus LockDown Browser
Important: Administrator rights are needed to install Respondus. If you’re using someone else’s device, have them approve the install and enter their credentials.

Mac/Windows users
If your testing window does not fill the screen, check the display settings on your computer. For high-resolution monitors, try 3840 x 2160 resolution with 200% scaling.
iPad users
Download and install the Respondus LockDown Browser from the App Store.
You will need to lock the iPad’s orientation before beginning the exam. Prop the iPad vertically so it faces you — we recommend a case or stand and an external keyboard if you own one. Do not lay the iPad on a flat surface.

Step 4: Run the Respondus system pre-checks
Before you start, close every application except the browser you used to log into ATI, and make sure your device is fully charged or plugged in. See this article for tips on setting up a room for a remote at-home exam.
Click Start Test on the Respondus Required page. If your browser asks, click Open LockDown Browser OEM. On a Mac you may also be asked to let LockDown Browser access your Downloads folder, camera, and microphone, and to close any open applications; allow each one. Respondus then runs nine pre-checks in order.

1. Terms of Use
Read the Respondus Monitor student terms and click Agree.

2. Webcam check
Position yourself so your face is centered in the video window, click Record Five Second Video, and speak in your normal voice (say the alphabet or count to 10). Play the clip back to confirm you can see and hear yourself, then click Continue. If it didn’t record properly, click Try Again.

3. Additional instructions
Read the exam rules: no phones, tablets, smartwatches, smart glasses, notes, or books; no communicating with other people; stay in your seat; and if something interrupts you, briefly explain it out loud to your webcam. Click Continue.

4. Guidelines and tips
Click Next through the tips for choosing a quiet, well-lit testing space.

5. Student photo
Position your face so it fills most of the picture window, look into the camera, and click Take Picture. Your photo appears in the frame on the right. If it looks good, click Continue; if not, click Try Again.

6. Photo of ID
Center your ID in the window and hold it up to the camera so it fills the window and is readable, then click Take Picture. Check the photo on the right: if it’s blurry or cut off, click Try Again; if it’s clear, click Continue.

The #1 reason students have their exam stopped or flagged during a remote exam is that they didn’t take a picture of their ID during this pre-check, or the name on their ID does not match the name on their ATI account. To request a name change on your ATI account, see this article.
7. Environment check
Clear papers, books, and phones from around your computer. Click Start Recording, then slowly tilt and pan your webcam (or lift your laptop) to show your desk and the area around you. Click Stop Recording when you’re done.

8. Facial detection check
Sit still with your face centered in the video window. When you see the green thumbs-up and “Success!”, click Continue. Your face must be fully visible to the camera for this check and throughout the exam, so hats, hoods, bonnets, headbands, and other head coverings are not allowed. A recognizable religious head covering, such as a hijab, is allowed; bonnets, shower caps, and plain scarves are not. If you have a question, ask your school before exam day.

Tip: If a photo of you or your ID doesn’t come out right, close the Respondus program and start the pre-checks again. You can do this any time before the exam begins.
9. Begin exam
All eight checks now show a check mark. Click Begin Exam to start your TEAS exam.

Step 5: Take your TEAS exam
- Once the exam begins, a “Recording” icon will appear at the top right of the screen. Your school’s proctor monitors the exam.
- Do not exit the exam until you’re finished. You won’t be able to print, copy, open other applications, or visit other websites during the exam.
- When you submit the exam for grading, the webcam stops recording and you may exit LockDown Browser.
- Your score posts to the Results tab when you finish, unless your school has turned off score posting. Your transcript is sent automatically to the school that proctored your exam; to send it to another school, purchase a transcript credit in the ATI Online Store.

Frequently asked questions
What time should I sign in?
At least 30 minutes before the start time your school gave you, so you have time to launch Respondus, complete the pre-checks, and sort out any computer issues. You may begin up to 30 minutes after your scheduled start time; after that you may not be allowed to test. Your school’s policies apply.
I don’t see a Remote Proctoring Dry Run card, or I see a Proctorio one.
Go to Profile › Institution and make sure the school you are testing for is selected, then return to MY ATI › Assessments. If the Respondus dry run still does not appear, click Add a Product and enter ID 18904477 with password respondus. See the Dry Run Guide.
I didn’t get an Assessment ID. What do I do?
Your school or testing center emails it; your school decides when to send it: some send it two days before the exam, others 24 hours before. If you do not have it the morning of your exam, contact your school right away. ATI cannot issue it.
Do I need to install anything before the exam?
Yes. You need the Respondus LockDown Browser, installed on the same device you’ll test on. Administrator rights are required. If you’ve already completed a Dry Run on that device, Respondus is installed and you do not need to install it again — but you will still complete the system pre-checks on exam day, because they run before every exam.
Can I use a Chromebook?
No. Google Chromebooks are not supported for remote testing at this time. Use a Windows or Mac laptop or desktop, or an iPad.
What ID do I need?
A physical, current, government-issued photo ID (U.S. passport, driver’s license, state ID, or foreign passport). The first and last name on your ID must match the name on your ATI account. A missing ID photo during the pre-checks, or a name mismatch, is the most common reason an exam is stopped or flagged.
Can I use a calculator?
Yes, but only the one built into the exam. A drop-down calculator is available on screen during the TEAS. Personal calculators are not allowed.
Can I use scratch paper?
You may use one blank 8½ x 11 sheet of paper or a desktop dry-erase whiteboard, plus two writing instruments (in case one stops working). Destroy the paper when you finish.
Can I wear headphones?
No, unless your school has approved an accommodation. Testing accommodations
What happens if my computer or internet fails during the exam?
Technical problems with your own equipment or connection are not considered a valid reason for a free reschedule. Test your setup ahead of time with the Dry Run and make sure your device is charged or plugged in. If you have a technical problem while testing, exit the exam and contact your school’s proctor using the instructions your school gave you.
How do I reschedule?
Contact your school or testing center. Exams scheduled by a school are rescheduled by the school, not through your ATI account.
