TEAS testing accommodations: how to request them for each exam format

Testing accommodations are available for every ATI TEAS® exam format. What changes is who you ask and how far ahead you need to ask, because the organization proctoring your exam is the one that reviews your request.

Where to send your request

• TEAS at ATI (remote, proctored by ATI): email ATI Test Security at [email protected] at least 30 days before you plan to test. Details below.
• TEAS at Institution and TEAS Online at Institution (in person or remote, proctored by your school): contact the school or testing center. Each school sets its own accommodations policy and process, so ask them before you register. ATI cannot approve accommodations for a school-proctored exam.
• TEAS at PSI: request accommodations directly from PSI using PSI’s online accommodation request form. Details below.

TEAS at ATI: how to request an accommodation

ATI provides reasonable testing accommodations, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), to candidates whose documented disability or qualifying medical condition limits their ability to test under standard conditions. Submitting a request does not guarantee an accommodation; each request is decided case by case based on the documentation provided and in accordance with the law.

1. Get a letter from an objective, qualified professional. It must come from a physician or healthcare professional qualified to diagnose the condition and give an opinion on the need for accommodation. “Objective” means someone who is not you and not related to you. The letter must be dated within 2 years of your planned exam date.
   • If you are a high school student, or a post-secondary student within 2 years of high school graduation, a current, active Individual Educational Plan (IEP) may be used instead of a letter.
2. Make sure the letter or IEP includes all of the following. Incomplete requests take longer.
   • The specific disability or diagnosis. For mental or emotional health conditions, include the numerical DSM classification code.
   • A brief explanation of how the condition limits your ability to take the exam under standard conditions.
   • If the condition is not permanent: the date first diagnosed, the expected duration, and the method used to make the diagnosis.
   • The specific accommodations you need. They should be adequate without creating an unfair advantage. Candidates approved for extra time receive 1½ times the standard time; if you need more than that, the letter or IEP must state exactly how much time and why.
3. Email your request and documentation to ATI Test Security at [email protected] at least 30 days before you plan to test or sign up for a test date. Include everything with your first email.
4. Allow at least 30 days for a decision. Requests are processed as quickly as possible, but some take longer.

TEAS at PSI: how to request an accommodation

PSI provides ADA accommodations for TEAS at PSI exams, whether taken at a test center or remotely through PSI’s online proctoring. Submit your request through PSI’s online accommodation request form (see How to request an accommodation for a TEAS at PSI exam) and upload documentation from the medical authority or learning institution that made the diagnosis. The documentation must be on that authority’s letterhead and include:

• A description of the disability and how it limits you when testing.
• The recommended accommodation or modification.
• The name, title, and telephone number of the medical authority or specialist.
• The original signature of the medical authority or specialist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear headphones or earplugs?

Only with an approved accommodation. Without one, headphones and earplugs are not allowed in any TEAS format. More about headphones

How much extra time can I get?

For TEAS at ATI, approved extended time is 1½ times the standard time. Anything beyond that must be specifically justified in your documentation. Schools and PSI set their own extended-time arrangements.

I already registered. Can I still request an accommodation?

Contact the proctoring organization right away — ATI Test Security, your school, or PSI. Because review can take 30 days or more, a request made close to your exam date may not be decided in time, and accommodations cannot be added on exam day.

Does a documented disability guarantee an accommodation?

No. Requests are reviewed individually, and the decision depends on the documentation you provide.
